YEARS OF SERVICE FOR RETIREMENT UNDER
STATE TEACHERS RETIREMENT SYSTEM POLICY

PURPOSE

To outline the policy followed by West Virginia University for verification of years of service for retirement benefit eligibility in the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) in accordance with WV Code 18-7A.

SCOPE

Full-time regular employees participating in the State Teachers Retirement System plan at West Virginia University, including those on the regional campuses, are covered under this plan.

POLICY

Eligible employees earn years of service credit for State Teacher Retirement System purposes based on the total years of contributing service at West Virginia University. Other acceptable service may be other WV State service, Out-of-State teaching service and military service. Years of service accepted by State Teachers Retirement Service is cumulative contributory service, during which the employee is deemed to be full-time regular and is actively contributing to the plan. Annual appointments of nine (9) or more months in a fiscal year shall be credited for one year of service for STRS purposes. Employment on a temporary or less than full-time basis will not be counted towards years of service for this purpose. Time off payroll does not count toward years of service.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION

The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of Human Resources, West Virginia University.
