TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS POLICY

PURPOSE

To outline the means by which West Virginia University, in compliance with Department of Human Resources memorandum and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provides training and development courses.

SCOPE

This policy applies to any WVU employee in a regular classified position, including those on the regional campuses; and, employees of approved non-university units; may participate in workshops offered through the Department of Human Resources, provided they meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the workshop. For the purpose of this policy approved non-university units are Barnes and Noble Book Stores, Inc.; University Health Associates; WNPB-TV; WVNET; the WVU Foundation, Inc.; and WVU Hospitals, Inc.

POLICY

WVU is supportive of individuals’ continuing education efforts. To this end, WVU supports personal and professional development opportunities through the efforts of the Training and Development Unit. Persons seeking to participate in training and development workshops will follow established procedures in order to register for or cancel their desire to participate. Some workshops are designed for specific job classifications; persons meeting the designated classification will receive priority in registration. WVU employees will receive priority in registration over employees of approved non-university units. An enrollment fee may be charged for non-university employees. A record of training workshops attended will be maintained, and a transcript of workshop activity for each fiscal year will be provided to WVU participants annually. Any participant may obtain a record of workshops attended in previous years for a fee. WVU employee attendance at workshops mandated by the supervisor will be considered work time.

Circumstances may necessitate the cancellation of a scheduled workshop. In the event a pre-scheduled trainer is unable to present a workshop, an alternate trainer will be secured. When a trainer cannot be obtained or other problems arise, it may necessitate cancellation and/or rescheduling of a workshop. When rescheduling occurs, participants enrolled in the original workshop, followed by participants on the original wait list, will be given preference for the workshop registration. The Training and Development Unit will notify individuals registered for workshops in the event of a cancellation. In situations when the workshop may be canceled due to inclement weather, individuals are advised to call the Training and Development Unit at 293-7217 for confirmation.
