INTERIM PROMOTION/TEMPORARY UPGRADE OF A
CLASSIFIED POSITION POLICY

PURPOSE

To outline the means by which West Virginia University will effect an interim promotion/temporary upgrade of a classified position in accordance with West Virginia Board of Trustees Series 62.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all classified positions at West Virginia University as defined in West Virginia Board of Trustees Series 62, including those on the regional campuses.

POLICY

When significant changes in duties and responsibilities of a position occur on a temporary basis, an interim promotion or temporary upgrade may be requested by submitting an updated position description. Such a temporary reassignment shall normally be for no less than four (4) consecutive weeks and no more than twelve (12) consecutive months. If warranted, the employee shall receive the entry rate of the new classification or an increase of 5% of his/her current pay for each pay grade, whichever is greater. The change in wages will be effective upon proper processing and is not applied retroactively. At the end of the temporary reassignment, the affected employee’s salary will be reduced to its original level including any salary increases the employee would have received.

The employee will receive a memorandum from the appropriate Dean/Director reflecting the terms of the appointment. This memorandum must include the new salary and its effective date, the approximate duration of the appointment, confirmation of responsibilities during this period, salary reversion and other relevant factors.
