EMPLOYEE EDUCATION POLICY

PURPOSE

To outline the policy at West Virginia University regarding employee education.

AUTHORITY

WV Board of Trustees Employee Handbook, WV Code 18B-7-5

SCOPE

All full time-regular employees are eligible to attend class under this policy. This policy is equally applicable to those pursuing a General Equivalency Diploma, additional job-related training (Vo-Tech,) undergraduate or graduate level study. Undergraduate or graduate course work may be taken at any West Virginia Board of Trustee institution of higher education at which the employee is officially registered.

POLICY

West Virginia University encourages employees to take advantage of educational opportunities for career development and self improvement. To achieve this end, a combination of flexible work hours, annual leave, and work release time may be used to permit employees to attend classes. Such use of time for educational purposes is subject to the approval of the employee’s immediate supervisor for classes taken during the regularly scheduled work day.

CONDITIONS

Employee work release time for education, up to three (3) clock hours during any academic semester, not to exceed ninety (90) clock hours per calendar year, may be granted with supervisory approval. Employee education work release time is deemed credited work time for payroll purposes and should be documented accordingly on employee time records. Travel time to and from classes is not covered by work release time, but rather through approved flexible work hours and annual leave. It is understood that that time taken for classes beyond 90 clock hours must be covered by the employee’s approved earned annual leave or through approved flexible work hours.

At the end of each semester, the employee must provide appropriate evidence of completion of course work to his/her immediate supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION

The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of Human Resources, West Virginia University.
