LEAVE GRANTING FOR DONATION OF BLOOD PRODUCTS POLICY

PURPOSE

To outline the means by which West Virginia University allows classified employees the opportunity to donate blood products during work hours.

SCOPE

All classified employees of West Virginia University, including those on the regional campuses, are covered under this policy.

POLICY

WVU is committed to meeting the needs of the community and is supportive of the efforts of its employees to address such concerns. In this spirit, employees may be eligible for work release time to donate blood products (whole blood and plasma) up to six times a year (once every 56 days). Time away from the work site must be prearranged consistent with the employee’s departmental guidelines. Approval of absence for such purposes will be based on operational impact and result in authorization for work release time.

Blood product donations under this policy must be made at a West Virginia University sponsored blood drive or an American Red Cross office location. Written verification on an American Red Cross Verification Form may be requested by the supervisor.

PROCEDURE

Additional information regarding this policy or the proper procedure to follow can be obtained in the Leave Granting for Donation Of Blood Products procedure.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION

The immediate supervisor is responsible for the approval/denial of requests for time away from work for the purpose of donating blood products. The Employee Relations Unit in the Department of Human Resources, at 293-5700 or P.O. Box 6640, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.
