HIRING CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES ABOVE THE ENTRY RATE POLICY

PURPOSE

To outline the means by which West Virginia University will hire an applicant above the established entry rate for a position in accordance with WV Code 18B-9 and West Virginia Board of Trustees Series 62

SCOPE

All classified positions at West Virginia University, including those on the regional campuses, are covered under this policy.

POLICY

Employees will not be paid less than the established statutory entry rate for a position; exceptions for employment above the entry rate are possible. Exceptions to the established rate will be considered for an applicant, and granted when in the best operational interest of the institution and justified according to established procedure. The request and supporting information must be provided in writing by the hiring supervisor to the Human Resources Representative for processing; the determination will be reported to the appropriate Vice President for final decision.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION

The hiring supervisor is responsible for requesting an employee be hired above the entry rate. The Classification and Compensation Unit in the Department of Human Resources, at 293-5700 or P.O. Box 6640, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION

The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of Human Resources, West Virginia University.
