ELIGIBILITY FOR BENEFITS POLICY
PURPOSE
To outline the definitions and requirements used by West Virginia University for determining if an employee should be considered eligible for benefits in accordance with West Virginia Board of Trustees Series 31, 35 and 62.
SCOPE
This policy applies to all University classified staff, non-classified, faculty and faculty equivalents/academic professional (FE/AP) employees, including those on the regional campuses.
POLICY
In order for a classified, non-classified, or FE/AP position to be benefits eligible, the position must be created to last for at least nine months of a twelve-month period and be scheduled to work a minimum of 1040 hours during the twelve-month period. Faculty employed for a full academic year (fall and spring semesters), with a minimum 9-month contract, with at least 6 credit hours teaching per semester or its equivalent are benefits eligible.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION
The employing unit is responsible for determining if a position is benefit eligible and for properly processing a Personnel Action Form that indicates an employee’s eligibility for benefits. The Benefits Unit or the Employee Relations Unit in the Department of Human Resources, at 293-5700 or P.O. Box 6640, are available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy for classified and non-classified employees. The Faculty Development Office in the Provost’s Office, at 293-2021 or P.O. Box 6203, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy for faculty and FE/AP employees.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION
The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of Human Resources, West Virginia University.
