Presenter: Lynda Birckhead Danley, Ph.D., Associate Director/Training Director, WVU Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services

This presentation offers some basic tools for addressing difficult issues you encounter in your day to day work life. Cognitive models will be presented for thinking about issues and for interacting with others about them. Specific communication skills will be presented, and via discussion and role play you will have the opportunity to add to, polish, or sharpen the contents of your administrative/supervisory toolbox. The overarching goal for this presentation is to increase your comfort and feelings of competence in addressing conflictual situations in the workplace.

Presenters: James Morris, Director of WVU Employment and Employee Relations, and C.B. Wilson, WVU Associate Provost for Academic Personnel
Remember the auto trips you used to take with your family? Inevitably, Mom and Dad spent a great deal of time settling the disputes that occurred in the back seat, hearing complaints such as "He's on my side of the seat" and "She won't stop singing!" Clearly, nobody was going to get any peace until the dispute was settled. If you sometimes feel that your patience is being worn thin because of the conflicts in your office, you may want to pull the car over and find out how to deal with them before your organization steers itself completely off-course. Conflict can happen at any time and it usually doesn't end in a pleasant experience. At work, when conflict occurs, you may need the help of others to get through it. The University has several resources to help leaders through conflict. The Human Resources department, the Provost's office, the President's Office for Social Justice, and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program are all available to those supervisors who must handle or be involved with conflict. In this session, the traditional approaches and resources available to assist you will be examined. What is HR's role when conflict occurs? How can the Provost's office help? When you're informed that a grievance has been filed, do you know the smart moves to make? We'll explain these and other resources available to you in this informative session designed to keep your department on the right route.

1:00 p.m. � 5:00 p.m. �Fitting the Forum to the Fuss: Alternative approaches to conflict resolution�*
Presenter: Thomas O. Patrick, Professor WVU College of Law
Workplace conflict, if left unattended or unmanaged, is costly and destructive. At best, relationships are damaged and inefficiencies abound. At par, a grievance is filed or civil litigation is spawned, and the impact ripples�it sometimes avalanches�far beyond the individual litigants themselves. At worst, egocentric behavior erupts into severe injury or loss of life. The alternatives by which we manage conflict and the skills we utilize in those processes inform supervisory and managerial responsibility in diverse settings. These skills are essential, in part, because those in conflict may continue in their workplace relationships long after their �case� has been decided. This session will explore alternative conflict resolution processes and the skills which are necessary to make them effective.
