Is a university campus a setting likely to experience conflict? Definitely, conflict is expected, anticipated, and it will arise. The WVU campus is a place where people from diverse disciplines, personal points of view, cultures, ages, physical abilities, and experiences must relate to one another in classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, lounges, sports arenas, and outdoor spaces. Besides the exchange of ideas and opinions that occur in intellectual settings, people on campus will have disputes over ordinary daily interactions with one another, the interpretation and Registration of policies and procedures, and their competing interests and wants.
As WVU administrators, you are called upon to use a wide variety of skills in your leadership position. Your ability to diagnose and manage conflict and work toward resolution is critically important. However, in your current leadership position, you may feel burdened with unrealistic expectations of resolving conflict and settling disagreements, or you may be making decisions that maintain the status quo or simply avoid most controversy. Neither choice is optimal.
For this reason, The Office of Academic Affairs, the Division of Human Resources, and the President's Office for Social Justice, have planned "Braving the Tough Stuff: Practical Training in Conflict Management" for May 17-19 at Oglebay Resort and Conference Center in Wheeling, West Virginia. This conference is tailored specifically for WVU leaders with supervisory/managerial responsibilities. Registrants should have at least a 50 percent administrative responsibility and five or more direct or indirect reports. Supervisors of academic units may include, for example, department chairs, division directors, etc.

Experts in conflict resolution, mediation, and communication will mentor administrators throughout the three-day conference. Dedicated time for successful work environment development and discussion on a variety of dispute resolution methods will be provided in a distraction-free, resource-rich environment.
